Managing for Impact is not merely about ‘how to get the job done’. It is more than a set of tools and methods to use in order to become successful in development initiatives. It is an integrated approach to how people think and work, what motivates them, what enables them to work together, and what they need, to unlock their potential to the benefit of the development initiative’s efforts. For this reason we adopt an integrative perspective on capacities and conditions. The essential idea is that an interrelated set of capabilities will provide collective capacity to effectively manage for impact. These capabilities emerge from interrelated (individual) assets, competencies, attitudes and behaviours. Strengthening capacities and conditions for M4I therefore also needs to cover the full range of assets, competencies, attitudes, behaviours and the collective capacity that needs to be built from that.
